Lisa Vogel, Pierre Cardin and the Power of the Circle
Monday, April 12th, 2010What first struck me, when I started looking into Lisa Vogel’s Masters of Design muse Pierre Cardin, was how quickly I could see the connection between his aesthetic and her garments.
When describing why she chose Cardin, Lisa wrote “I was impressed by how he incorporated geometry [especially the circle] into his work.” Lisa also noted that she used the circle and a 60s mod aesthetic in her designs.
A quick trip to Cardin’s website shows exactly what she described—circles and a mod look.
Some Cardin highlights include introducing the “bubble dress” in 1954, designing the stylish suites worn by the pristine Mr. John Steed in the British TV series The Avengers, and proposing the collarless button jackets favored by the Beatles. He was also known for exploring space-age and unisex designs.
In addition to his use of geometric shapes, Lisa noted that she appreciated the way Cardin ignores the shape of the body and takes a more sculptural approach to design.
While inspired by Cardin, Lisa has certainly brought her own vision to her collection, including a more modern silhouette, embroidery and other hand stitching details, and using natural fabrics rather than the synthetic fabrics that were popularized by Cardin in the 60s.
One piece that she is particularly proud of is a black, boiled-wool cape.
“I hadn’t worked in boiled wool before,” Lisa said. “It draped even better than I anticipated.”
Also apparent in her collection is Lisa’s interest in construction.
“I love pattern making and construction,” she noted. “To me, these two disciplines are like solving a puzzle. All the pieces have to fit together just perfectly.”
Lisa, who hopes to build on her appreciation for the art of construction by working in technical design, has been getting a lot of hands-on experience interning with Lane Bryant. She adds that she could see herself staying in Columbus after graduation.
“A lot of people don’t realize that Ohio is such a hub for fashion,” she said. “Lots of companies are here.”
Stay tuned this spring as we check in with all 26 designers in the 2011 CCAD Senior Fashion Show. Don’t miss seeing their work in person. Get tickets at www.ccad.edu/fashion.

Monday, April 12th, 2010Not saying it does. Used to be a wide spread of public housing through the metro area. The tendency lately seems to be pushing it further west.
I agree totally with your point but that’s exactly what is happening in other areas not totally on the radar yet.

Today in Congress
Saturday, April 10th, 2010In the House, courtesy of the Office of the Democratic Whip:
TOMORROW’S OUTLOOK
On Thursday, the House will meet at 10:00 a.m. for legislative business.Last votes are expected between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.
“One Minutes” (10 per side)
H.R. 4 – Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act of 2011 (Rep. Lungren – Ways and Means) (2 ½ hours of debate)
In the Senate, courtesy of the Office of the Majority Leader:
Convenes: 10:00am
Following any Leader remarks, the Senate will proceed to a period of morning business until 11:00am with senators permitted to speak therein for up to 10 minutes each. The Republicans will control the first half and the Majority will control the final half.
At 11:00am, the Senate will resume consideration of S.23, the America Invents Act.
There will be a period of morning business from 2-4pm. The Majority will control the first hour and the Republicans will control the next hour.
Senators should expect roll call votes in relation to amendments to the America Competes Act to occur throughout the day.
Today’s big event: repealing a part of a law that the House already voted to repeal completely. Which I guess you could take as an admission of failure on the first repeal. Why else would you see H.R. 2 purport to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act, and then just a few weeks later, see H.R. 4 attempt to repeal just some small part of it?
Well, whatever. Another bill with another closed rule. And one with a self-executing provision to deem a substitute bill, H.R. 705, adopted as an amendment. Not unusual or unprecedented, by any means. It’s just that, you know, this was the sort of thing Republicans promised they wouldn’t do. But that’s not unusual or unprecedented, either. The minority party always swears up and down that they won’t do this if they win the majority. Then they do. That’s just the way it is. It’s the only way to keep the votes and the debate under control. And thus, the only way to be able to schedule the end of your work week for 2 p.m. on Thursday.
The Senate continues its work on the patent bill, S. 23.
By the way, were you interested in how the Senate voted on that Lee amendment? The one suggesting that the Senate think positive thoughts about a constitutional balanced budget amendment? Well, it came to the floor under a unanimous consent agreement requiring a 60-vote threshold to pass it (which means either someone threatened a filibuster or had a point of order against the amendment), so it went down, 58-40. Among Dems taking the free vote: Begich (AK), Bennet (CO), Brown (OH), Carper (DE), Kohl (WI), Lieberman (CT), Manchin (WV), McCaskill (MO), Nelson (FL), Nelson (NE) and Udall (CO). Senators Conrad (ND) and Landrieu (LA) didn’t vote. Conrad’s opposed such amendments in the past, Landreiu’s supported them.
Ah, well. I guess it’s not yet the “sense of the Senate” that they should actually try to pass such an amendment. Or maybe it is. Who knows what 58 votes means these days?
Oh, one note before I remind you that the committee schedule, as usual, appears below:
I’ll be filling in as guest host on the Mark Thompson show on the Sirius XM Left channel today, broadcasting from 5-8 p.m. EST. We’re taking this five-comment-a-day feature nationwide, baby!
I lied. Second note: the House Judiciary Committee marks up the extremely dangerous and unbelievably invasive H.R. 3—the “No Taxpayer Funding For Abortions Act”—today at 10 am.

Newspaper Crowns Alumna ‘Royalty in Knitting World’
Saturday, April 3rd, 2010“To the world of knitters,” Charleston Daily Mail reporter Monica Orosz writes, “Nicky Epstein’s name is about as well known as that of Madonna or Mick Jagger. She is a rock star, only with string and sticks rather than a microphone and guitar.”
As an Advertising & Graphic Design alumna, Epstein (CCAD 1974) launched her fashion career after winning a McCall’s Needlework design contest in 1979.
The article continues, “Ever mindful of what other designers were doing, however, Epstein said she was inspired to constantly challenge herself to come up with something different. ‘I just had to keep reinventing myself,’ she said. She designed flowers and other embellishments. She created unusual constructions for scarves and sweaters – such as scarves made of knitted circles.
She is now a world renowned knitwear designer, teacher and author of more than 20 bestselling books. She has won the National Independent Book Publisher’s Award for Best Craft Book Of The Year three times.
Her award-winning designs have appeared in every major knitwear magazine, in museums and on television, and she has taught classes to knitters around the world and hosted many Vogue Knitting Tours overseas as well as others. She has also designed her own beautiful line of silk scarves, buttons and clasps.
