A Silent Killer of Women

Cancer is defined as a disease process in which cells grow unregulated by the body part it is inhibiting. Cancer can remain confined to that part of the body, where it starts, or it can spread (a process called metastasizing.)

Among American women, ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer. Of the cancers that attack the female reproductive system, it is the leading cause of death. About two-thirds of the deaths from ovarian cancer occur in women age 55 and older. A quarter of ovarian cancer deaths occur in women between 35 and 54 years of age.

Causes

The cause of ovarian cancer is unknown, as the risk for developing it is related to many factors. The strongest risk factors are hereditary. Women with a personal history of breast cancer, a family history of breast or ovarian, and/or mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have an increased risk for developing ovarian cancer.

Childbirth as Protection

Women, who conceive their first child at an early maternal age, have a reduced risk of developing ovarian cancer. The same goes for women that have multiple births earlier in life with the final pregnancy at an older age. Women using low dose hormonal contraception have also been shown to have a protective effect where ovarian cancer is concerned. In fact, women who used oral contraceptives for 10 years had about a 60% reduction in risk of ovarian cancer.

Symptoms

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are notoriously nonspecific. They are viewed as any of the conditions that affect the abdominal, gastrointestinal, and pelvic regions. The nature of these symptoms often causes ovarian cancer to be misdiagnosed because a physician may conclude that another condition is to blame for your symptoms. This appears to be the rule, rather than the exception. Unfortunately, by the time the cancer is diagnosed, the tumor has often spread beyond the ovaries to more vital organs. Thus, ovarian cancer is called a “silent killer.”

Some symptoms of ovarian cancer are:

bloating, and/or vague lower abdominal discomfort, increased abdominal girth, difficulty ingestion normal meals, and/or feeling full quickly, abnormal menstrual cycles, pelvic or abdominal pain, and urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency).

Diagnosis

Physicians can run a myriad of tests, to aid in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Some of the less invasive tests used are:

a complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistry, CA125 (blood test), quantitative serum HCG (commonly known as a blood pregnancy test), alpha fetoprotein, abdominal x-rays/imaging, trans-vaginal ultrasound, or abdominal CT scan.

It is important to note that, although these tests could help render a diagnosis, none of the above tests are part of routine screening for any gynecologic cancer condition. Ultimately, the definitive diagnosis of ovarian cancer will come from biopsy, which is a surgical procedure aimed at taking specimens from the abdomen for analysis.

Ovarian Cancer Screening

As you’ve probably gathered from my personal story, the pap smear does not detect this cancer. In fact, the pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer, not ovarian cancer. What is a screening test? They are used to detect disease in individuals without signs or symptoms of that disease. The intention of screening is to identify disease early, thus enabling earlier intervention, treatment, and possible cure.

In truth, there are no definitive screening tests or guidelines for ovarian cancer. However, ovarian cancer is highly fatal (about 45% live longer than 5 years after metastatic disease). It is also rarely diagnosed in its early stages. Because of these factors, there has been an increasing amount of research and debate over whether the medical communitys implementation of screening is for ovarian cancer.

The screenings are already in place for other gynecologic malignancies such as cervical and breast cancer, via pap smears and mammograms respectively. In fact, if diagnosis is made early in the disease, and treatment is received before the cancer spreads outside the ovary, the 5-year survival rate of ovarian cancer is about 94%.

Be Vigilant and Proactive

Until there is definite screening for ovarian cancer, it is important that all women take a proactive position in terms of personal health. Call for an appointment with your provider if you have any of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, or if you are a woman over 40 years old with any of the above symptoms, and have not recently undergone a pelvic examination. Women age 21 and above, should have routine pelvic examinations annually. Ultimately, ovarian cancer detection highly relies on a woman’s personal vigilance and her awareness of her own body.

It is possible to beat these odds on your own, by being proactive. Women experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms should see their gynecologist or request a referral from to one from the family doctor. This will improve your chances of early diagnosis, which will also lead to a brighter prognosis. Dead Man’s Cell Phone

Friday, May 28th, 2010
Don't be fooled by the title Dead Man's Cell Phone. While the man is most certainly dead, this play is not a murder mystery. Rather it is a dark comedy that explores our world of electronic connections.

People are on their phones all the time – in a cafe with friends, in class with other students, in the theatre, in the grocery, buying shoes, walking the dog, riding a bus, driving a car – presumably connecting with others but missing the moment they're in.

The play opens in a quiet café where a rather dull, introverted woman spends much of her time reading while the world buzzes around her. Her quiet universe is suddenly disturbed by a cell phone ringing incessantly at the table next to her. Exasperated, she steps out of her complacent, comfortable world to confront the owner of the phone, and as the title suggests, she finds him dead, but dead with a lot of loose ends.

By answering his phone, she is propelled on a surreal, often frustrating, comedic journey into the world of the dead guy.

The play runs nightly March 2-5 at 8 p.m., with a 3 p.m. matinee on March 3. Admission is free

No, I’m pretty sure it’s the same neighborhood.

Besides, even if it wasn’t, why does Franklinton have to be the County and City’s go to place for low income housing, rehab facilities, and halfway house locations? Concentrating disadvantages in one area that already lacks jobs can only exacerbate the problems.

A record 1 in 9 U.S. homes are vacant, a glut created by the housing boom and subsequent collapse.

HER Realtors AKA

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

We used to be HER Realtors…

HER Realtors WorthingtonLet’s get pronunciation out of the way.

HER is pronounced “H. E. R.” HER is not pronounced “her*.”  HER is a man’s initials.  Two men… Harley E. Rouda Sr. and Harley E. Rouda Jr.

HER initially speaking

HER are the initials of at least two men…  If HER are your initials you can claim the best real estate company (I might be biased but a local business magazine says so too) in Central Ohio is named after you.

Henry Elvis Robinson?

Hector Edwin Rodriguez?

I guess whether you are a man or a woman you could make that claim.  Not for real, but kind of for fun, you know…

Heloise Elizabeth Ryan is H.E.R. as is Heather Erin Rolfson, Helen Edna Randall.  I could go on and on and these last five H.E.R. s are just names I made up.

For all I know the company which was known as HER Realtors for decades was known by the founders name and not his initials in the early days…  1956.  Before my time.

AKA… of course stands for “also known as”,  A.K.A.  As a teenager I read a famous crime book and read “AKA” phonetically through the entire book… discussing the book with my sisters I realized my faux pas.

Back to HER Realtors in Central Ohio

I have known  people to  ask if HER is an all woman company…  no it was founded in the 1950s by a man.  Plenty of men.  We don’t think of HER spelling out “her”  or I don’t think we do.  We pronounce it H.E. R. and men work there.

Columbus Ohio real estate 2006

Image above is from 2006, ‘Real Living is Awesome’ on Discover Columbus Ohio a site that is all Columbus real estate, usually in the side bar on ColumbusBestBlog.com.

In 2002 HER Realtors became HER Real Living.  I think.   The Real Living brand was born in 2002.  Kaira Rouda’s ActiveRain (a real estate network) profile says:

“I created the Real Living Real Estate brand in 2001 as the first woman-focused brand in real estate, acknowledging women make or influence 91 percent of all home-buying decisions. It’s great to see that the industry as a whole has come around to that realization.”

Kaira’s link was to Real Living… the big company that Real Living HER in Central Ohio is affiliated with…I disabled it. No big deal.   If you want the link to Real Living  you can get it on Kaira’s profile (link above.)

We used to be HER Realtors then became HER Real Living…Real Living HER logo

And then we became HER Real Living.  Big HER circle, small Real Living Circle. I had that logo here somewhere but for some reason a lot of old images on this site are not showing….  Then we became Real Living HER.  2006?  2007? Big Real Living circle, small HER circle.

In the Columbus Board of REALTORS® MLS we are HER Real Living.  When I call to schedule appointments and say I am “Maureen McCabe with Real Living HER”, I am often corrected by the employees at Centralized Showing Service, that I am with “HER Real Living.” OK. Thanks…. Many home showings in Central Ohio are scheduled using CSS.  I like CSS but I sometimes think there is a bit of attitude about my being dyslexic about the company name.  Or the name as they know it.

Perhaps I will just start saying “HER.” Of course I will say it  “H.E.R.”

This Week News called the company “HER” in a newspaper headline about our office moving to Downtown Worthington.

Real Living Flag

Real Living

Real Living is awesome c. 2006 the Real Living brand in Columbus Ohio.  Her Real Living in Columbus Ohio is the local company.

Real Living HER in Worthington Ohio is at 6902 N. High St. but is moving to downtown Worthington, Old Worthington, this spring.

OK sometimes HER is pronounced “her” Real Living HER is AKA as HER Realtors or formerly known as HER Realtors but it’s got a nice ring to it.  If your name is Henry Elvis Robinson, Hector Edwin Rodriguez, Heloise Elizabeth Ryan, Heather Erin Rolfson, or Helen Edna Randall… all I have to say is Hello
