Runway Hopefuls Undergo Careful Review

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

All aspects of each garment were carefully reviewed.

One of the first big tests on the road to launching the CCAD Fashion Show is facing the jury. This is where a group of professionals evaluate two garments from each designer.  A lot is at stake. No one is guaranteed a spot on the runway and if the jury thinks a designer’s work is not ready to walk, they could be dropped from the line up.

This year’s seven-member jury included Sarah Brennand and Kristen Tonge from Abercrombie & Fitch; Kristy Eckert from Dispatch Media; Melissa Kieffer from Lane Bryant; Julie Dean and CCAD Fashion Design alumna Sally Ewing (CCAD ’07) from Limited Brands; and Maren Roth from Rowe Boutique.

Designers were not present during the review, leaving the jurer’s to look at each garment objectively, knowing only the Master Designer muse associated with the look.

They carefully looked at each piece from every angle, they felt fabrics, examined linings, and paid close attention to handmade accessories.

Over all the jury was very impressed with what they saw (soon after leaving Ms Kristy Eckert tweeted, “Some really beautiful pieces in this year’s show! So impressed.” But rest assured the designers are getting invaluable constructive feedback from this experience—during the three-hour process each jury member took detailed notes, which will be typed up and turned over to each student.

Soon we will have a list of all the designers participating in the 2011 Fashion Show (and we’ll include their Masters of Design muse with links to websites or Wiki bios).  Then there’s the photo shoot and for the rest of the spring you’ll be able to dive deeper into each designer’s creative approach and inspiration for his or her collection.

If you want to see the finished looks, be sure to buy your tickets online now. They are selling quickly and prices go up in March. (Click thumbnail to view full image).

Alumna to serve as delegate in Mom Congress

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Alumna Hilary (Meyers) Frambes will head to Washington D.C. in April to serve in Parenting Magazine's Mom Congress.

Illustration alumna Hilary (Meyers) Frambes (CCAD 1992) was chosen as the Ohio Delegate to Parenting magazine’s Mom Congress to be held at Georgetown University in Washington D.C., April 10–13.

“When the Mom Congress contest came up, I saw it as an opportunity to have my voice heard regarding the importance of art education,” Frambes said.  “As a mother of two school-aged children and an art advocate, I’m proud to represent Ohio at the 2011 Mom Congress in Washington, DC this year.”

Frambes volunteers at her children’s school, launching a weekly art enrichment after school program. She is also pursuing her Master of Art Education through University of Florida’s online program and hopes to teach upon graduation.

Parenting magazine launched the Mom Congress initiative in March 2009 to celebrate and connect moms fighting for better schools. During the event, the moms meet with the country’s most prominent education and advocacy leaders to discuss the importance of family engagement in helping America achieve its education goals.
