John Boehner calls for cuts to Social Security, Medicare

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

John Boehner, Wednesday evening on Greta van Susteren’s show:

We really have to focus in on that two-thirds of the budget that’s really driving the deficit and the debt to the levels that we see. I’ve said for months that it’s time to have an adult conversation with the American people about the big challenges that face us. When you look at Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, these are important programs for tens of millions of Americans. But they’re not sustainable at current levels. They’re not affordable for our kids and grandkids. We’re going to have to make some changes. But I think the first step is laying out the size of the problem, and here in the coming weeks, I expect you’ll see more and more from our team laying out just how big this problem is.

If Boehner really wanted to have an adult conversation, he’d acknowledge that Social Security is in solid shape, and that simply raising the payroll tax cap would secure it’s solvency for the forseeable future. And Boehner would also admit that it was President Obama and the Democrats who took the first step towards reducing Medicare costs through the passage of health care reform. Yet instead of working with Democrats, Boehner and his gang attacked them for reducing the cost of Medicare. Even though those cost reductions will not reduce the quality of care, Boehner and the GOP claimed they had reduce benefits.

But now here he is, barely three months after the election, telling the public that the Republican Party thinks now is the time to cut not just Medicare, but also Medicaid and Social Security. Who knows, maybe he wants to return to being minority leader, because falsely claiming that we need to cut Social Security to balance the budget is exactly the kind of thing that should cost him the Speakership and Republicans the majority.

Alumnus Featured on NPR News, Exhibit Opening Sunday

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Alumnus and Board member Jeff Stahler was featured on NPR News. An exhibition of his work opens Sunday, February 27.

CCAD Illustration alumnus Jeff Stahler (CCAD 1977) had a conversation with WOSU host Ann Fisher on her show All Sides with Ann Fisher on 89.7 NPR News Monday, Feb. 21. The pair talked about the unique world of a humorist and cartoonist.

Drawing Laughter: A Chalk Talk with Jeff Stahler, an exhibition of Stahler’s work, opens Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Hammond Harkins Gallery in Bexley.  He will demonstrate drawing and answer questions at the free event.

An award-winning editorial cartoonist who also serves on CCAD’s board of trustees, Stahler creates Moderately Confused, a whimsical slice-of-life daily comic panel for The Columbus Dispatch. Stahler also draws political cartoons that are distributed worldwide by Newspaper Enterprise Association. His cartoons appear every week in USA Today and are frequently reprinted in major magazines and newspapers, including Newsweek and The New York Times.

All Sides with Ann Fisher is a two-hour, daily public-affairs talk show designed to touch upon all sides of the issues and events that shape life in central Ohio. Listeners participate via telephone, e-mail, Twitter, and text messaging to add to the conversations.

So what’d they talk about? Listen to the conversation here.

Illustration alumnus Ron Miller (CCAD 1970) started off 2011 in a big way, landing design work with four major science magazines in addition to his other projects.

“Since the first of this year, I’ve provided cover and interior art for Astronomy, Sky & Telescope, Scientific American and Geo magazines,” Miller said. “My work is also featured in two interactive sites sponsored by Scientific American.”

“I’ve done the cover for a new science fiction novel as well as having completed writing and illustrating three new YA books for Lerner Publishing. I will be starting work shortly on a coffee table art book for Farrar, Strauss & Giroux.”

Miller is an illustrator and author, specializing in science, astronomy, science fiction, and fantasy. In addition to providing artwork for many magazine and book publishers, he has authored, co-authored or edited more than 50 books, including several novels. He’s also designed postage stamps and worked on motion pictures as a production designer and special effects artist.

Mid-century modern design

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Say hello to Frank Lloyd Wright! Or at least be reminded…

Currently on the market is a one-of-a-kind home located at 4398 Dublin Rd. in Columbus.

The residence is being sold by only the second owners who are relocating to New York. They think of this as their “dream home”, are sad to leave, but life has a way of shifting the future so we must shift too right? I think this home was built from a dream and will find it next caretaker who feels the same.

In 1985 Gary Rausch, an architect and VP of Lupton Rausch Architecture and Interior Design, built a house for his family. I can only guess, however, how long the design process was. What is clear is that he built what he wanted to live in. A home of quality and custom details (the dental molding he made himself) and convenient built-ins-staying true to the character of the architecture style.

Rausch designed and had constructed a 2,276 sq. ft mid-century modern stone and stucco ranch that rests on a serene acre plus on a private lane leading to the Scioto River. The location is perfect really. Close to 270, Riverside Dr, shopping in the Mill Run area, minutes to Tuttle Mall. The perfection lies too in the “take a breath” quality of pulling into the crushed stone drive and seeing some open space, possibly some curious deer, and even occasionally some wild turkeys!  Unbelievable–right off of Dublin Rd. just north of Cemetery and south of Davidson–the possibiltiy of owning a 365 day vacation home close everything needed for daily convenience. Cool.
