Future Forward

Full exhibition is now viewable online at: http://www.becaicad.org/upcoming-exhibitions.php

The BECA Foundation is pleased to present the ‘FUTUREFORWARD’ exhibition of new art + new design at BECA ICAD (International Center for Art + Design), 527 St. Joseph Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 – across from the Contemporary Arts Center through May 29, 2010. The exhibition highlights works that reveal an idea, message, contribution, warning or solution that if carried forward may profoundly impact the future – be it positively or negatively.

Dear Friends,

The timing and poignancy of this particular exhibition opening last weekend as we here in Louisiana begin to simultaneously experience what may be the worst environmental disaster/oil spill since the Exxon Valdez, makes an already important exhibition even that much more so. Our thoughts are with those families who have lost loved ones in the oil rig explosion as well as with the many families here in Louisiana and around the United States whose livelihoods will be adversely impacted as a result. The resulting damage to our fragile coastal ecosystem was preventable and as such is unacceptable but it is now, unfortunately, inevitable. We hope that each of you, viewing the exhibition online or in person here in New Orleans, takes away something you might be able turn into a positive action toward the future for yourself, your family and your community.

Sincerely,
Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough, Directors

This group exhibition features new work by Jonas Angelet, Nikkita Bhakta, Richard Elaver/Phil Renato/Dennis Dollens, Chris Esposito, Sayaka Ganz, Marc Holt, Yeji Jun and Molly Rogers.

The exhibition runs through May 29, 2010. Gallery hours are TH/FRI: 1pm – 6pm and SAT/SUN: 11am – 6pm. The full exhibition is now viewable online at: http://www.becaicad.org/upcoming-exhibitions.php

Artists receive 60% of sale proceeds and The BECA Foundation receives 40% of sale proceeds to help fund + further its international exhibition programming for the benefit of artists, designers and the public. Exhibition sponsorship opportunities are available for future exhibitions. Please email us to inquire. Thank you for supporting new art + new design + new ideas!

CCAD Announces Retirement of Provost

Friday, August 13th, 2010

CCAD Provost Anedith Nash

Anedith Nash, Ph.D., is retiring as CCAD’s provost after more than a decade of successful and sensitive leadership.

Dr. Nash joined CCAD in 2000 and has participated in the leadership of several important initiatives, including a five-year project to implement policies, procedures, and staffing for a campus-wide student data system, culminating in a “one-stop shop” for student services in a newly designed facility. Her leadership, in consultation with the president, deans and faculty, led the college to an academic plan for 2003-13, which has, in large part, been completed.

“As I think back to the beginning of her tenure here, and reflect on the transformational changes she has orchestrated, I am inspired by the splendid amount of growth, refinement, and improvement she has overseen,” said CCAD President Denny Griffith. “She has been my partner and collaborator for over 10 years, and while I hate to lose her she leaves with the love and warmest wishes from me and everyone in the CCAD family.”

Some of the significant changes that have taken place during Dr. Nash’s tenure include curricular development, planning and implementation of one-stop student services and student affairs departments, sabbaticals and other development opportunities for faculty, expansion of technology in the academic programs, expanded exhibitions programs, and the first graduate program at the college–an MFA in Visual Arts which opened Fall 2010.

Prior to coming to CCAD, Dr. Nash was academic dean at Oregon College of Art & Craft. She previously held administrative and faculty positions at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Hamline University and Macalester College.

Alumnus Gives CCAD a Shout-Out on Nationally-Selling Product

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Alumnus Joe Suroviec gave CCAD a shout-out on his nationally-selling shirt designs.

Illustrations by Illustration alumnus Joe Suroviec (CCAD 1984) are for sale in Cabela’s stores nationwide, and thanks to Suroviec, so is the CCAD name—sort of. The tag included on all freshwater fishing shirt designs by Suroviec features his biography, in which Suroviec attributes his talents to his education at CCAD.

The tag reads, “Wildlife Artist Joe Suroviec has an extensive background in hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. His art education came from the prestigious Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio. This formal training enhanced an ability to create originals based on his first hand experiences and not from reference photographs.”

When telling us about his good news, Suroviec wrote, “I enjoyed my time at CCAD and as an alumnus have benefited greatly from the teaching of Ron Tardino, Frank Hoffelt, Leland Mc Celland, Stuart McKissick, and Ned Moore—especially in retail illustration. Believe me, the reputation of this school is highly regarded in the art field—one that I have been fortunate enough to be in since 1982.”

As an outdoor writer, a tournament winning fishing guide and angler in the Florida Keys, Suroviec is also the Official Artist of the Snook Foundation, Florida Sportsman Magazine and is sponsored by Evinrude E-TEC Motors, Kistler Rods, Snagproof Lures, and Mitey Mite Anchors. A native of Waterford, PA, Joe now resides in Palm City, Florida.

Want to buy one of Suroviec’s designs? Check out Cabelas.com.

Does Timing of Hormone Therapy Affect Breast Cancer Risk?

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Initiating hormone replacement therapy before or shortly after the onset of menopause is associated with a greater risk of developing breast cancer compared to those women who started hormone therapy after living with menopause for a few years or more. That’s according to (ungated) "Breast Cancer Risk in Relation to Interval Between Menopause and Starting Hormone Therapy".

Other findings include: (1) further confirmation of the observation that hormone therapy increases both false positives and false negatives on mammography; (2) obesity increases the risk of breast cancer in women not on hormone therapy though it has no effect on the risk of those undergoing hormone replacement therapy; (3) contrary to other observations, in this Million Woman cohort risks did not revert to background following cessation of therapy indicating that hormone therapy may not merely "fuel the fire" but may in some cases start it as well; and, (4) the highest risk of breast cancer was seen in women currently on estrogen-progestin who had begun the therapy less than 5 years after the onset of menopause.
