Open thread for night owls: ‘Rebuilding the Dream’ lands in Milwaukee
Thursday, June 30th, 2011At the Campaign for America’s Future, Terrance Heath writes Milwaukee: Rebuilding The Dream:
The Congressional Progressive Caucus’s “Speakout For Good Jobs” tour rolls into Milwaukee, Wisconsin, tonight, on what could hardly be a more auspicious day for workers in that city, as Gov. Scott Walker’s bill stripping the state’s public workers of almost all collective bargaining rights goes into effect. Walker’s assault on public workers is only the most recent chapter of a story of decline much like Detroit’s.
According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, Milwaukee only just missed being among the top 10 metropolitan areas that have lost the most jobs since 2000. Fifty-three of the nation’s 100 metropolitan areas have lost private sector jobs in the past 10 years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. (Forty-seven gained jobs.) With 73,900 private sector jobs lost between May 2000 and May of this year — a 9.5% decline — Milwaukee comes in 11th. (Earlier today, the BLS reported that the Milwaukee metropolitan area had an unemployment rate of 8% in May.)
Many of those jobs were lost in a recession that’s left millions of Americans unemployed. According to the Department of Labor, Milwaukee lost 50,000 jobs in 2009 — ranking third after Las Vegas and Detroit, among the nation’s largest cities with the most job loss.
Like Detroit, Milwaukee has been hit hard both by the recession and the decline of manufacturing. The city has lost 56,000 manufacturing jobs, and those losses are a big reason why 34% of African American men in Milwaukee are unemployed. …
The news from Milwaukee is not all bad, though. … there are people and organizations doing the right thing in Milwaukee and cities like it.
At Daily Kos on this date in 2007:
If you followed the race to map the human genome, it was hard to avoid the name J. Craig Venter. Venter is one of those scientists who other scientists love to hate. Brash, self-aggrandizing (one of the five human DNA sequences used in mapping the genome was his), and irritatingly successful both in developing techniques that sped up the process of mapping and in grabbing patent rights on the sequences his companies have uncovered, Venter has been seen as both hero and villain. He sometimes seems like a character from an old Heinlein novel — the kind of multi-talented millionaire genius who is out to rule (or ruin) the world.
Yesterday, Venter’s team — naturally located at the J. Craig Venter Institute — moved a step toward something both utterly intriguing and absolutely unsettling. They took a big step toward creating artificial life.

Olentangy Falls… the home stretch
Wednesday, June 29th, 2011Olentangy Falls… 2011 BIA Parade of Homes, the home stretch.
Parade of Homes – New England Homes from Parade of Homes on Vimeo.
This is it. The final weekend of the 2011 Parade of Homes at Olentangy Falls in southern Delaware County. Visiting this front porch will be trespassing after Sunday, June 26, 2011 so go visit the BIA Parade of Homes now…
It is so funny in the New England Homes video done by the BIA, builder Doug Annette calls the home “a sophisticated Connecticut farmhouse” but I have friends who have spoken of this year’s Parade homes “southern charm.”
Do you have memories of a farmhouse in your past that would come back looking out over the beauty of the Olentangy Valley from this porch?
The house is sold. Most of the 2011 BIA Parade of Homes are sold. Only the MI Homes, 2011 Parade entry was unsold the last time I heard. I heard it was sold though earlier… or that they were negotiating a contract on the house.
New England Homes… New England Homes Ohio
When Doug of New England Homes says in the video that the porch is eight feet wide (or maybe that is eight feet deep?) it makes me wonder how wide the wrap around porch on my grandparent’s farmhouse porch was. As kids we did not sit in rocking chairs on that porch but it was a great porch for playing on… running on. The farmhouse (it really was a farm) built in the early 1900′s for my great grandparent’s Henry and Julia McCabe had a wraparound porch. That wraparound porch had “southern charm.” Southern Wisconsin charm.
Is there a wraparound front porch you remember?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011Can you believe it is time for Red, White & Boom? Since Red, White & Boom is on Friday, July first, this year, rather than the usual July 3, Red, White & Boom, it is soon.
I can practically do ’365 Things to do in Columbus, Ohio this weekend’ if I wanted to between parades and fireworks in various Central Ohio communities.
Here’s a link to a list of Red, White & Boom plus many more local fireworks shows throughout Central Ohio on NBCi Channel 4.
Parades… Upper Arlington, Orange Township and my favorite, the Doo Dah Parade.

As always Experience Columbus is a great resource to find out what is going on in Central Ohio. Experience Columbus has the when and where of events throughout Central Ohio this weekend and always.

Creativity and the CMA
Sunday, June 26th, 2011The art experience is about making connections between the art and the visitor. Social norms, values, injustice throughout history and throughout the world, views on love, war, politics, scientific and technological advances–all of this can be seen and connected to via art. Art tells a story, makes a statement and what it says can be different depending on the viewer. Engaging in an art experience can be done anywhere there is art –but the CMA philosophy of creating themes and age divergent tools to interact with the art is innovative and approachable for all.
Visiting the CMA is an opportunity for everyone, teachers, school groups, families, seniors, juniors–everyone to engage in creative interaction with the museum and their own imagination. You are invited to Create your own art experience, to “use” the museum instead of just “visiting”. To that end, the Museum is thinking of ways to bring the community into the museum in personally creative and fun ways, such as today’s Craftacular Spectacular! I hope some of you will attend!
