October 2011 Columbus Home Sales Up
Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011
October 2011 Home Sales were up according to the Columbus Board of REALTORS®,
The Columbus Board of REALTORS announced to members, the media and the public yesterday that home sales were up in October 2011. Quoting the Columbus Board of Realtors:
“Home sales in central Ohio home have exceeded 2010 for the last four months according to the Columbus Board of REALTORS®. The 1,543 homes sold in October marks an 8.6 percent increase over the 1,421 homes sold in October of 2010. Home sales in September were up 16.6 percent compared to the year before.”
I usually post market reports for some Central Ohio school districts long before this time of the month:
I often do market reports by zip codes and other school districts as well, Central Ohio real estate market, you can see the reports on the Columbus Ohio real estate blog, seen in the sidebar here. I usually do market reports for single family homes only. The Columbus Board of Realtors market reports are for residential properties, condominiums and single family homes combined. The exception is condos in the Worthington area, I do a separate report on condos in the Worthington area most months.
“The Columbus Board of REALTORS® Multiple Listing Service (MLS) serves all of Franklin, Delaware, Fayette, Licking, Madison, Morrow, Pickaway and Union Counties and parts of Athens, Champaign, Clark, Clinton, Fairfield, Hocking, Knox, Logan, Marion, Muskingum, Perry and Ross Counties.”
I focus on the real estate market in Franklin and Delaware Counties.

The Biggest Learner Episode 8
Monday, November 21st, 2011|
Success starts with the right schedule. This week, the Biggest Learners get a brush-up on making the most of their time.
Schedule planning helps you avoid taking classes that don't count toward your degree, says Advisor Todd Taylor. Make sure you get a plan of study, either from your department or an advisor. Use DARS (degree audit) to determine how many classes you have left, and use u.select to determine how your classes will transfer. And someone who knows about schedules is Jack, who's working a 30-hour bakery job alongside his studies. This Team Swag member is looking to bring his work ethic to bear on his studies. After last week's midterm check, the Biggest Learners are getting ready for an end-of-the-quarter sprint. How are your classes going? Tell us about it on facebook and twitter. |

Religious liberty, the state, and the law
Sunday, November 20th, 2011
BALTIMORE — The nation’s Roman Catholic bishops opened a new front in their fight against abortion and same-sex marriage on Monday, recasting their opposition as a struggle for “religious liberty” against a government and a culture that are infringing on the church’s rights.
The bishops have expressed increasing exasperation as more states have legalized same-sex marriage, and the Justice Department has refused to go to bat for the Defense of Marriage Act, legislation that established the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.
“We see in our culture a drive to neuter religion,” Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of New York, president of the bishops conference, said in a news conference Monday at the bishops’ annual meeting in Baltimore.
— New York Times, Nov. 15th
There is apparently a new drive underway. By “new” I mostly mean “old”, because it is the same campaign as always, it has only shifted fronts. The premise is and always has been that if government does not act to enshrine one particular religious viewpoint into law, it is oppression against that religious group. It is the worst, dullest, and most hollow notion of “religious freedom” possible, because it of course demands that the government reject all possible religious groups and interpretations except for your own. It demonstrates an inherent bigotry on the part of the asserting party, yes, but it also demonstrates a particular philosophical stupidity, one so egregious that it naturally makes the listener suspect all of the rest of the claimant’s philosophical underpinnings. If you devote your life’s work to the supposed study and expression of ethics and morality, but obtusely misunderstand the meaning of the word liberty, then your life’s work seems to have been considerably less productive than you imagine it to be.
CCAD’s Design Group, Alumni & Partners Clean Up on Awards
Sunday, November 20th, 2011It’s been quite a design awards season for Columbus College of Art & Design, especially for the college’s Design Group—a student-staffed, in-house design agency.
Columbus Society of Communicating Arts held it’s annual Creative Best awards on Nov. 17 and CCAD was well represented. Several local agencies that employ CCAD alumni took home coveted awards, including EdgeCase, which won an Award of Excellence in the Interactive category for JRubyConf.com which was designed by 2011 grad Justine Arreche. Pallavi Sen, a fine arts senior, took home two merit awards from the Student category.
CCAD’s Design Group earned a Best in Category award in the Motion Design category for its Happy New Year video. The winning team included Media Studies major (and last year’s Outstanding Senior) Taehee Lee (CCAD 2011) who came up with the concept and directed the video; videographer, media studies junior Alex Trimpe, CCAD Creative Director Lindsay Kronmiller, and Editorial Director Laura Bidwa.
CCAD’s partnership with local brand agency Ologie on the Masters of Design, Senior Fashion Show event collateral earned both organizations Awards of Excellence in the Print category for the invitation and the show catalog. The winning team was comprised of, from CCAD, Arreche, Bidwa, Danielle Deley (CCAD, Advertising & Graphic Design, 2011), Kronmiller, and Simone Noronha (CCAD, Advertising & Graphic Design, 2011) and from Ologie, Andy Hayes and Kelly Ruoff.
“These projects not only showcase our student work to the outside world, but also allow our students to build the relationships and business experience that will place them above the rest upon graduation,” said Kronmiller.
CCAD’s Fashion Show print collateral also earned awards from American Graphic Design, which awarded CCAD four certificates of excellence for branding initiatives, including print and environmental graphics.
In addition to the Fashion Show invitation, the college received awards for the Art Walk (environmental graphic’s in CCAD’s Canzani Center), the Viewbook, and a positioning piece, titled Think. Do.
Both the Viewbook and the Fashion Show invite were done through the collaboration with Ologie, which is owned by board of trustee member and alumna Bev Bethge (CCAD 1982-1986). The company is an award-winning branding agency that serves national and international clients. The Design Group students worked closely with the agency to complete both pieces gaining mentorship while producing award-winning print materials.
The Art Walk panels were designed by Design Group, with the help of Chute Gerdeman, another award-winning strategic brand and design firm in Columbus (which also took home awards from CSCA on Thursday).
“’When prospective students, parents, and the general public encounter our materials, they are seeing student work,” said Kronmiller. “It is a great testament to the talent and ability of our students.”
The American Graphic Design Awards are open to all businesses and partnerships in the graphic design community. There were more than 8,000 entries and only 15 percent were then recognized with an Awards Certificate of Excellence.
Judges for the CSCA Creative Best awards were Brigitta Bungard, assistant creative director at the Museum of Modern Arts in-house design studio in NYC; Joe Marianek, associate partner at Pentagram, an international design consultancy; and Ken Visocky O’Grady, an associate professor at Kent State University.

Obama touts Asia-Pacific trade deals, U.S. job creation in weekly address
Saturday, November 19th, 2011If we want an economy that’s built to last and built to compete, we have to change that. We have to restore America’s manufacturing might, which is what helped us build the largest middle-class in history. That’s why we chose to pull the auto industry back from the brink, saving hundreds of thousands of jobs in the process. And that’s why we’re investing in the next generation of high-tech, American manufacturing.
President Barack Obama gave this morning’s address from Indonesia, where he’s been busy working on trade deals, and the setting allowed him to tie together some of his most common themes: trade, jobs and manufacturing.
These agreements will help us reach my goal of doubling American exports by 2014—a goal we’re on pace to meet. And they’re powerful examples of how we can rebuild an economy that’s focused on what our country has always done best—making and selling products all over the world that are stamped with three proud words: “Made In America.”
This is important, because over the last decade, we became a country that relied too much on what we bought and consumed. We racked up a lot of debt, but we didn’t create many jobs at all.
He touted his swing through the Asia Pacific region and his meeting with leaders in Hawaii, saying that the agreements finalized this week will save millions of U.S. jobs and will help meet the goal of doubling our country’s exports by 2014.
He closed the weekly address on a familiar note—acknowledgement of tough times, belief in U.S. resiliency and optimism for the future.
We may be going through tough times, but as I’ve said time and time again, the United States still has the world’s most dynamic economy, the finest universities, the most innovative companies, and the hardest-working people on Earth. We can compete against anybody–and we can win. As President, I intend to make sure that happens by doing everything I can to give American workers and businesses the chance to succeed.
