200Columbus Cakes

Thursday, March 8th, 2012
Columbus State Community College received plenty of savory stories in the media last week. It was all due to the 30 cake designs created by students in Chef Karen Krimmer's Principles of Baking Operations class. They spent weeks sketching and planning before designing and building cake replicas of Columbus landmarks. All of them were featured — and then served – at the city's official bicentennial birthday celebration on February 10, 2012. Giant Eagle donated 150 sheet cakes, the icing and other décor elements. And here's the icing on the cake: The grocery chain and the 200Columbus committee also pitched in ,000 in scholarship money for the top seven designs — making it a fun competition. Take a look at the video to see some of the steps along the way and the highlights of news coverage that topped it off.

Alumnus Shows Trophy Work in New York City

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Chris Cosnowski's painting "Cheerleaders"

Alumnus Chris Cosnowski (CCAD 1992) has a solo exhibition, at Lyons Wier Gallery in New York City.

Cosnowski’s exhibition, American Metal, features paintings depicting gold trophies. The Illustration alumnus’ paintings are a metaphor for his view of American society.

“I used this imagery to represent the need for excessive security just to live freely today,” Cosnowski said. “America is ostensibly a meritocracy, and I think we can all agree that hard work, talent, creativity, and integrity should be rewarded. American exceptionalism, however, seems to have been largely replaced with greed and a craving for celebrity.”

According to the gallery’s press release, the Cosnowski’s painting called Cheerleaders is meant to “embody America’s obsession with sports, beauty, and social standing.”

The exhibition is open March 1–31, 2012.

New York Gallery Exhibits Alumnus’ Work

Monday, March 5th, 2012

O'Reilly's sculpture "Eucharist"

Alumnus John O’Reilly (CCAD 2007) will have his first solo exhibition, John O’Reilly: I stand and look at them long and long, at RH Gallery in New York City.

The Fine Arts graduate creates sculptures that portray animals in a state between sleep and death. O’Reilly’s sculptures start with hand-modeled clay forms, which are then used to make a silicone mold. The mold is filled suspended with particles of porcelain, bone, and graphite in with polyurethane resin.

O’Reilly resides in Brooklyn, New York. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and he received a post-graduate fellowship from the New York Academy of Art and a residency at the Leipzig International Artist Residency.

RH Gallery presents contemporary art with a focus on process-driven craft by international and national artists.

The exhibition is open March 6–April 27, with an opening reception on March 6, 6–8 p.m.

Facing The Jury: Senior Designers Showcase Their Final Garments

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

The judges carefully examine each garment.

Before the flashing lights; before the heart-pounding music; before the runway, there is the jury. One of the key moments before the CCAD Senior Fashion Show is truly “buttoned-up” is when each senior designer’s garments is evaluated by a group of professionals from the fashion industry. Their spot in the show is not guaranteed until this process is complete and their designs are ruled ready for the runway.

This year designers could show up to six garments, and many pieces in this year’s collections were also complimented by the designer’s pick of diverse accessories, some of which were handcrafted by the student. Not only will the jury impact which designers will participate in the fashion show, but their evaluations will be a deciding factor in which of the specific designs ultimately grace the runway.

The nine-member jury included Richard Aschenbrand, CCAD dean of visual communications; Jackie Ayers, senior designer for Lane Bryant; Katie Brennan director of design at Abercrombie & Fitch; Julie Dean, associate vice president of technical design and Sally Ewing, technical design manager for LaSenza; Maren Roth, owner of Rowe Boutique; Kristy Eckert, editor for Capital Style;  Lucia Murillo, vice president of design at Justice; and Sara Zimmerman, stylist for Express.

Suzanne Cotton, chair of the fashion design department kicked off the event by asking the jury to look at the garments as a whole, providing comments on the overall design as well as the, fit, quality, chosen fabric, and construction. The jury members were also asked to take careful notes on each piece, as they would later be shared anonymously with each of the designers, regardless of the final outcome.

Designers were not present during the actual review, leaving the jury members to view each garment knowing only the designer’s name and garment number.

As the first model stepped forward the jury sat poised and prepared to see what the class of 2012 had to offer. Jury members asked the models to turn or step closer to the jury table in order to take a closer look while others requested to touch and feel the fabric’s texture. Some even asked the models how it felt to wear and walk in the piece. The process continued for several hours until the final garment was shown.

It will take a few days to review and collect all of the jury’s comments before the final selections are announced, so be sure to check back here for the details. And, coming soon,  individual profiles of each designer presenting in the show.

If you want to ensure you have a seat to see the chosen pieces, buy your tickets online now. They are selling quickly and prices go up soon. Based on the collections shown today, it’s a night you don’t want to miss.

Art of Illustration Exhibition Opens in Short North Gallery

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

AOI poster created by junior Wes Talbott

CCAD’s annual Art of Illustration (AOI) exhibition opens March 3 at Rivet Gallery in Columbus’ Short North arts district.

The student-produced exhibition is in its 15th year and is part of a collegewide illustration competition that is juried by local professional illustrators.

The exhibition, which used to be shown on CCAD’s campus, moved to Rivet Gallery last year. The exhibition will once again debut during Gallery Hop, a first-Saturday-of-every-month event in the Short North.

“We wanted to showcase the best illustrative work created by students of CCAD and give them a chance to have their work exhibited in a gallery off campus,” said Brianne Schulze, a student organizer of AOI. “This is our second year working with Laura Kuenzli at Rivet Gallery, and she has been a big help to us throughout the entire process and in giving the exhibited artists an opportunity to sell their work.”

This year the show is organized by four Illustration students: seniors Lexie Holliday and Brianne Schulze, and juniors Andrew Thompson and Wes Talbott. Advisors are Professors Stewart McKissick (CCAD 1979) and Walter King (CCAD 1981) and Chair of Illustration Chris Payne.

Left to right: Chris Seaman, Jeff Carlisle, Lora Innes, Chris Payne, Adam Watkins, and Maxe Smith

The panel of judges included alumni Lora Innes (CCAD 2002, Media Studies), Chris Seaman (CCAD 2000, Illustration), Adam Watkins (CCAD 2004, Illustration), Maxe Smith (CCAD 2009, Illustration), and Jeff Carlisle (CCAD 1997, Illustration). They evaluated 190 submissions, narrowing the pool down to 41 accepted illustrations for the show.

Awards will be given for first, second, and third place. Six pieces were also chosen as  judges’ picks and will receive awards. The show is sponsored by Chipotle, Starbucks, r designs & printing, Noodles and Co., Dick Blick Art Materials, Kroger, and Giant Eagle.

Art of Illustration will open March 3 at Rivet Gallery, 1200 N. High St., with a reception from 7–10 p.m., during which awards will be given. The show will run through March 28, 2012.

It’s Photo Shoot Sunday at CCAD

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

CCAD Fashion Show Photo Shoot

Overheard: I’m going down to grab the pasties, I’ll be right back.

Let me put that in a little context for you. It’s early afternoon on a Sunday, and I am at the photo shoot for the CCAD fashion show.

Those who have been to the main event may remember that we produce a gorgeous (yes I’m biased) magazine-style lookbook. Today we create the photography that makes that book amazing.

By we I mean everyone but me. I get to sit back and observe, and kind of goof around—did I mention I love my job?

I’m perched in the photo studio at CCAD.  It’s pretty much how you would imagine a professional photography studio. Lots of backdrops, props, massive lights and other equipment (which remains a mystery to me), and music. I don’t know who set the Pandora station but he/she is my new favorite person.

Downstairs, in a classroom, models go through hair and  make up. Then up here in the studio they get routed through four set ups, where they continue to be fussed with and then, eventually shot.

I’m not going to lie, photo shoots, like so many other things in life, are only fun for an observer for about an hour (at most). This is work people, and as such it can be a little repetitive—and there’s a lot of hurry up and wait. Fortunately I’ve got this blog to keep me busy.

Side note: between the strobes and the flashes going off I’m amazed people don’t randomly have seizures during photo shoots. I’m pretty sure I’m going home with an eye twitch.

There’s one thing happening this year that is different from years past. All the photography is being done by CCAD photography students. You will come to realize that every creative aspect of the fashion show event, from fashion design, to photography, to graphic design, is the result of CCAD talent.  There is a practical advantage to tapping into our own talent pool as well as a creative one. With multiple photographers working simultaneously the shoot is more efficient—which means that by the time you read this I’ll probably be writing snarky tweets about the Oscars.

Throughout the shoot I kept waiting for there to be a five-inch heel related accident. But other than a blowing a circuit, the drama was provided only by the garments. There are some photos below, but I tried not to give too much away. If you want to see more you will need to get yourself a ticket.

One more thing to mention, I took these photos of real photographers taking photos. So, adjust your expectations accordingly.

That’s a wrap people.

Alumna Presents at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

Christoff backstage at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

Fashion Design alumna Genoveva Christoff (CCAD 2009) has proven herself as someone to watch—and recently she has spent a lot of time watching her designs go down a runway in front of fashion’s elites.

Christoff was selected as one of four designers to present in the Diet Pepsi Style Studio Show during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City.

Each designer had to create three different looks for the fashion show. Simon Doonan, the fashion commentator for the show, chose fierce animal prints, avant-garde work wear, and metallic finishes inspired by the Diet Pepsi can for the designers to interpret.

Christoff created her three looks in less than two weeks. The first look was a leather and chiffon dress inspired by zebra prints. The second was a lavender-colored dress with an asymmetrical collar, and her final ensemble was a dress and vest in metallic leather and silk.

“There are so many things that were memorable during my stay in New York,” said Christoff. “First, meeting with Simon Doonan, then all the preparation for the actual show, especially the moment I saw so many famous people in the audience, like Mary-Kate Olsen, Debra Messing, Angela Simmons, Jay Manuel, Jay Alexander, Jonathan Adler, Kelly Rutherford, and others.”

“I was also able to meet Christian Cota and attend his fashion show; I was impressed to see his collection and to see the designs up close. I hope one day I will have a chance to show my full collection and have access to such beautiful fabrics and techniques,” she said.

Christoff was recently selected to be one of five finalists in the Adrianna Papell for E! Live from the Red Carpet design contest. The winning design will be worn to a Hollywood red carpet event by a celebrity, and its designer will receive a ,500 cash prize and a trip to Hollywood. The winning dress will also be included in the Adrianna Papell Spring 2012 Collection for E! Live from the Red Carpet, which will be available at Lord & Taylor.
